- Grant gathered a far larger army in the Memphis area, and on November 9, 1862 Van Dorn abandoned Holly Springs and retreated to the Tallahatchie River. Around the same time, Pemberton replaced Van Dorn as overall commander of the army. In late November, the Confederates began a retreat to Grenada. Grant outnumbered Pemberton by about 2 to 1.
